New Haven Finsters Diving Club
In high school, the guidance counselors pointed out that college admissions officers would be impressed by out-of-school activities that demonstrated risk-taking and leadership ability.
So, my friends Howie and Barry and I formed the "New Haven Finsters," a SCUBA diving club.
We really did go diving, and I designed a club emblem, and we were listed in the international registry of diving clubs. All three of us were club president (and the only members), and our guidance counselors noted our high office in our official records that were sent to the colleges we applied to.
We got mail from all over the world, including offers on great bargains on lead weights, and letters from divers who wanted advice on the best spots for diving in the New Haven area.
I'm really not sure if the Finster presidency enhanced our college acceptability. Howie went to Yale; but he probably could have gone there even if he was not the leader of the Finsters.
